Broiler farm is Brazil’s first Newcastle case since 2006

Brazil is experiencing its first outbreak of Newcastle illness in industrial poultry flock since 2006.

In response to a report from the World Organisation for Animal Well being (WOAH), the presence of the Newcastle illness was confirmed on July 17 during which a industrial broiler flock in Anta Gorda, within the state of Rio Grande do Sol, was affected.

The flock included 14,400 chickens, and of these, 3,472 died.

Brazil’s official veterinary companies reported the outbreak to the WOAH, after conducting gene sequencing testing.

The next management measures have been put in place: zoning, surveillance inside a restricted zone, motion management and traceability, the WOAH report acknowledged. Different procedures to be applied embody stamping out, disinfection, and official disposal of carcasses, byproducts and waste.
