My 10 Favorite Ontario Birds

Spring in Ontario, Canada, is the time for color and I like vibrant issues. The next  male birds dazzle, as they strut their stuff for the females.

1. Ruby-throated Hummingbird. Nothing is extra gorgeous than the ruby flashes from the male’s gorget. We imagine he’s displaying off for us, when actually he’s doing it to discourage rivals and entice females.

2. Northern Cardinal. The male’s purple color brightens winter days. Additionally, males begin to sing right here in mid-February, which provides cheer to a chilly, dreary month. By springtime, the male’s purple color is most intense. Along with his crest, black masks, and beatnik beard, he’s fairly sharp wanting.

3. Rose-breasted Grosbeak. This chicken’s music is described as an American Robin that has had voice classes. The rose-coloured vee on this grosbeak’s breast has led many non-birders to imagine they’re injured, and so they name birding sizzling traces to ask for assist for these birds.

4. Baltimore Oriole. This chicken is outfitted in orange and black. Once I hear its fluting name, I do know the songbird season has began for me.

5. Indigo Bunting. The color of this brilliant, blue chicken is an optical phantasm. Out of the intense sunshine, it seems to be brown or blackish.

6. Scarlet Tanager. This chicken has a tropical look, with a brilliant, purple physique and black wings. Its music is described as an American Robin with a sore throat.

7. Cedar Waxwing. This chicken is pure class for me: from its crest and slim black masks to its purple, waxy wingtips. These birds journey in flocks and it’s uncommon to see only one waxwing.

8. American Goldfinch. They’re brilliant yellow, with black wings, white wing bars, and a saucy black tam. They’re our newest breeder, delaying till late July to boost their younger, as they wait for his or her foremost meals supply (thistle) to go to seed.

9. Wooden Duck. These stunning geese, that are discovered on ponds or in wooded swamps, are vibrant and unmistakable. It’s at all times disconcerting to see them excessive within the treetops, the place they’ve their nest holes.

10. Harlequin Duck. That is one other vibrant, however clown-patterned, duck that’s discovered alongside the Lake Ontario shoreline. (Pictured on the high of this text.)
