Tofurky challenges Texas labeling legislation


A Texas meals labeling legislation is being challenged on behalf of plant-based turkey firm Tofurky, with the plaintiff claiming the legislation imposes unclear and obscure requirements on plant-based meat producers.

On August 31, the Animal Authorized Protection Fund (ALDF) and the Good Meals Institute (GFI), filed the authorized criticism.

The legislation being challenged is SB 664, which took impact one day after the criticism was filed. Often known as the Reality in Labeling Legislation, meals firms shall be in violation of the legislation if the meals’s labels, manufacturers, photographs, depictions or graphics misrepresent the contents of the package deal. The legislation stipulates that for imitation meats, akin to Tofurky plant-based turkey merchandise, will need to have some kind of disclaimer akin to “this product doesn’t include animal protein,” or phrases or phrases akin to, “meatless,” “meat-free” or “plant-based.”

The Reality in Labeling Legislation was signed by Gov. Greg Abbott on Might 15.

The Texas Division of State Well being Companies shall be liable for imposing the legislation.

Tofurky was bought by Japan-based tofu producer Morinaga Dietary Meals earlier in 2023.
