Avian flu strikes North Carolina turkeys once more


The presence of extremely pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) has been detected in one other business turkey flock in North Carolina.

America Division of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Well being Inspection Service (APHIS) reported that HPAI was confirmed a flock in Duplin County on February 20. There have been 20,900 birds in that flock.

That is the second case of HPAI to be reported in a business poultry flock in North Carolina in 2024, with each instances involving meat turkeys. The sooner reported case was a flock of 32,400 business turkeys in Lenoir County, with APHIS officers confirming that on February 9.

Each of those flock infections come after North Carolina went all of 2023 with none situations of HPAI in business operations.

The state had 9 business poultry flocks affected by HPAI in 2022, resulting in the lack of 481,400 birds. None of these instances had been in Duplin County.

Thus far in 2024, the next states have had confirmed instances of HPAI in business operations: North Carolina Wisconsin, Colorado, Nebraska, Indiana, South Dakota, Kansas and California. In Canada, the provinces of Alberta, Ontario and Quebec have had business poultry operations affected by the virus.
