Feds determine underage employees in Alabama Mar-Jac plant

Six workers have been recognized as minors by federal investigators from the U.S. Division of Labor (DOL) at a Mar-Jac Poultry processing facility positioned in north Alabama, in accordance to media outlet AL.com.

After being knowledgeable of the potential criminal activity, DOL investigators inspected the Jasper, Alabama, plant on Could 1,2024, and found the underage employees.

In line with the courtroom doc, the six employees had been on the corporate’s payroll for a number of months. Whereas the DOL stated the staff have been on the kill flooring deboning poultry and chopping carcasses, attorneys representing Mar-Jac plant stated the minors weren’t employed in hazardous areas and weren’t required to make use of heavy equipment.

The poultry producer’s attorneys declare that the minors used solid paperwork that handed by way of the corporate’s hiring system and have been terminated after their actual ages have been found.

Attorneys representing the DOL filed a civil motion lawsuit towards Mar-Jac on Could 7, 2024, to cease the manufacturing and sale of all items produced with baby labor by way of Could 31. Moreover, the DOL is requesting the plant to cease cargo for 30 days to stop “scorching items” from being offered into interstate commerce. Scorching items are outlined by the DOL as items that have been produced in an institution wherein oppressive baby labor occurred.

Mar-Jac’s attorneys say the civil motion is pointless and would trigger substantial quantities of labor for the remainder of the poultry plant’s workers, because the producer could be compelled to destroy all poultry meat concerned within the incident.

The lawsuit is ongoing as of Could 17, 2024.
