On June 27, 2023, a bipartisan group of Home leaders — led by Consultant María Elvira Salazar (R-FL), and joined by Reps. Dave Joyce (R-OH), Rick Larsen (D-WA), and Mary Peltola (D-AK) — launched the Migratory Birds of the Americas Conservation Enhancements Act of 2023. This invoice would make sure that the Neotropical Migratory Hen Conservation Act (NMBCA), a federal grants program for conserving migratory birds throughout the Americas, receives authorization for 5 extra years.
NMBCA is in contrast to many different federal grants in that tasks overseas obtain 75% of the funding. That is needed as a result of wintering habitat for birds within the Western hemisphere is most frequently outdoors the US. By conserving wintering habitat birds can thrive earlier than transferring to their breeding floor within the U.S. and elsewhere.
ProNatura, a Mexican nonprofit, was awarded 4 grants from NMBCA over the course of a number of years for Reddish Egret conservation and habitat restoration. These grants have been essential for shaping the Reddish Egret Worldwide Working Group and its subsequent 10-year conservation plan. This is only one instance of how NMBCA facilitates worldwide collaboration and profitable conservation work.
Hundreds of thousands of birds, together with the Reddish Egret, have benefited from NMBCA conservation tasks because the legislation’s passage in 2002. For the continued conservation of migratory species as we speak, NMBCA should be reauthorized and expanded with a funding enhance.
The Migratory Birds of the Americas Conservation Enhancements Act of 2023 raises the federal value share and will increase the appropriations stage from $5 million yearly to $10 million by 2028. This may create extra grant alternatives for numerous stakeholders to finish significant conservation tasks.
Now’s the time to construct on this momentum. Please ship a letter to your member(s) of Congress to induce them to help the Migratory Birds of the Americas Conservation Enhancements Act of 2023!
