Supermarkets demanding world commodity costs

Irish Farmers’ Affiliation poultry chair Nigel Sweetnam mentioned farmers won’t tolerate any discount within the margin they obtain, because the retail value wars intensify, in line with a press launch from the affiliation.
“Supermarkets are demanding premium product at world commodity costs with little or no regard to producers or processors’ prices of manufacturing, that are nonetheless considerably increased than the final time we have been in negotiations. We’ve got to be paid correctly,” he mentioned.
Any discount in farmers margins will inevitably result in farmers going out of enterprise, as has already occurred within the vegetable sector.
“It won’t be tolerated,” Sweetman mentioned. “We’ll take no matter steps are required to make sure the survival of household farms which can be producing high quality, inexpensive and wholesome meals in probably the most sustainable method.”
“At a time of accelerating prices, it isn’t real looking or acceptable to ask farmers to work for nothing, notably as poultry farmers have such large investments in buildings and services,” he concluded.
