USDA awards $9.5 million by Native Meat Capability grant

Earlier this week, the US Division of Agriculture (USDA) introduced that it’s awarding $9.5 million to 42 initiatives by the Native Meat Capability (Native MCap) grant program. This preliminary set of awards by Native MCap is for Simplified Gear Solely initiatives.

In April 2023, USDA introduced as much as $75 million accessible for Native MCap to fund modern initiatives designed to construct resilience within the meat and poultry provide chain by offering producers with extra native processing choices and strengthening their market potential. That is half of a bigger, $1 billion dedication to increase unbiased meat and poultry processing capability and provides farmers further, native choices to acquire fairer costs for the animals they increase and provides customers extra choices within the market. The Native MCap grant program is focused to help meat and poultry processors with smaller-scale initiatives, with a purpose to extend processing availability and selection for native and regional livestock producers. This system is run by the Agricultural Advertising and marketing Service (AMS) with funding from President Biden’s American Rescue Plan.

AMS has entered right into a cooperative settlement with the New Hampshire Group Mortgage Fund (NHCLF) to execute and administer Native MCap awards. NHCLF is liable for making grant awards and administering grant funds.

USDA will announce further awards for each Gear and Processing Enlargement Native MCap grants at a later date.

USDA is asserting this primary set of awards for simplified gear initiatives in 27 states and Puerto Rico. This set of awards fund initiatives from $10,000 to $250,000 to buy processing gear akin to meat grinders, stuffers, and people who smoke. For instance:

  • Yoder’s Butcher Barn, a Maryland-based livestock processing enterprise, is owned and operated by third-generation butchers and focuses on livestock slaughter providers for its group. They’ll use Native MCap grant funds to buy a brand new smokehouse, linker, mixer-grinder, patty machine, and saws to double their weekly beef and pork capability. Along with bettering processing effectivity, this venture will create three to 4 new jobs and facilitate livestock sourcing from a further 28 farmers.
  • Nordik Meats is a small, independently owned meat processing facility in Southwest Wisconsin. By Native MCap, Nordik Meats will buy a grinder, meatball maker, and packaging gear. This gear will present native producers with the flexibility to create new value-added merchandise for native customers, maximize the worth of their animals, make the most of byproducts, and improve animal harvest. Nordik Meats will improve the variety of livestock processed yearly by 100% over two years, implement new processing applied sciences, prepare 12 present employees, rent 4 new staff, and profit 350 native small household farms.
