“God, he’s monumental,” says Olympic, world and European dressage medallist Carl Hester, as he appears to be like over Julie Slades’ Cortaflex Mondriaan –steady identify Danny – for the primary time at William Funnell’s yard. Though Carl is synonymous with dressage, in his youthful days he evented to intermediate stage. However leaping a horse of this calibre is a wholly completely different ball sport.

William provides Carl a inserting pole to a cross of planks to interrupt him in gently and Danny jumps it in fashion. The planks are raised, the inserting pole is eliminated, and Carl is advised to canter to it.
“Ooh, I’m unsure about that”, Carl says, however Danny is foot-perfect.
In the meantime, the work pressure has been constructing a course and, regardless of his trepidations, Carl is distributed off to leap the seven fences. His grin afterwards says all of it.
“He actually makes you’re feeling like you’ll be able to experience,” he says. “You’re feeling so protected on him and you’ll inform that, no matter, he’ll take care of you.”
Carl enjoys Mondriaan’s scope over some greater fences.

“I hadn’t realised how supple a showjumper must be,” continues Carl. “To maneuver a horse via a mix, and shorten, lengthen and make minor changes to a fence, as a rider it’s a must to be product of India rubber.
“Twelve months in the past, I jumped for the primary time in years – somebody despatched me via a really quick double on a showjumper. It felt like I had almost damaged my again. In twenty-four hours time, I’ll have the bruises to show it.”
